A new Social Medicine team at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFG) is shifting hospital culture to focus on healing the whole person and reshaping attitudes about what it means to help the vulnerable among us.
Given the enormous challenges of living on the streets, many homeless individuals come to the emergency department (ED) for care because they have no where else to go. Social determinants such as hunger, isolation, substance abuse, mental illness, and others are often ignored despite the fact they drastically impact health.
