Statement on Monterey Park and Half Moon Bay Shootings

We mourn the tragic loss of life from the recent mass shootings in Monterey Park and Half Moon Bay. Like so many of our colleagues, we urge for measures to reduce gun violence and keep our families and communities safe.

Public health care systems primarily serve individuals from historically marginalized communities, including communities of color who are disproportionately impacted by gun violence. With a longstanding mission to protect and care for those most at-risk, public health care systems know the importance of doing this work and the integral connections between health and wellness, violence, and safety.

More must be done to prevent death and injury from gun violence. We stand in support with the families and communities impacted by these terrible events, and all those who have experienced gun violence. Public health care systems, the core of the state’s safety net, will continue to do their part to build healthy and safe communities for all.
